Volcano’s Friel reaps honors

It was a very productive spring semester for a Big Island student attending the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Rebekah S. Friel of Volcano made the Chancellor’s Honor Roll, receiving highest honors for a GPA between 3.8 and 4.0.

In addition, Friel received the Outstanding Fashion Merchandising Student Award from the UT-Martin College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.

Tsubota earns degree at SDSU

Of the nearly 9,600 graduates who walked across the stage during San Diego State University’s commencement ceremonies last weekend, only a select group earned recognition as honors graduates, including Korey Tsubota from Waikoloa.

Tsubota, an alum of Hawaii Preparatory Academy, received a degree in environmental engineering and graduated magna cum laude.

Magna cum laude is awarded to undergraduate students with a GPA of at least 3.65.

Agdeppa on WPI dean’s list

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Mass.) announced that Amanda Agdeppa of Honokaa a sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering, was named to the university’s dean’s list for academic excellence for the spring 2015 semester.

The criteria for the WPI dean’s list differ from that of most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average. Instead, WPI defines the dean’s list by the amount of work completed at the A level in courses and projects.

“WPI’s academic programs are remarkably rigorous, so being named to the dean’s list is a testament to hard work, a sharp mind, and a commitment to excellence,” said Provost Eric Overstrom.
